Winter in the High Plains of Texas

It’s the first week of November and we have a good 4-5 inches of snow under our belts already!  That tells us that we will more than likely get more snow and winter isn’t even officially here.  So, we were thinking of the top items that your heater is not warming your home as it should, and it seems it is working way too hard to keep up and still not heating your home.  One item you can think about, especially in older homes is how is the insulation in the attics?   I live in a 56-year-old home.   It needed some love and we decided to purchase it and fix it up.   After several 1000’s of dollars we thought we were good.  Ahh but we had an electrician up in the attic and he said there was less than four inches of insulation in the attic in some places none.  That got fixed quickly, now we don’t have those cold rooms inside anymore.  Oh, by the way, Adam’s Air does insulation!  Here are a few other items you need to be aware of and think about.

  • We do Winterization for free if you own your home.  It’s a 20-point check list of important items to make sure that when you do turn your heater on, it comes on and works and warms your home properly
  • Carbon Monoxide poisoning is deadly.  It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.  It’s a silent killer. It is produced by the burning of gas, wood, propane, charcoal, or other types of fuel via combustion engines, appliances, or heating systems, it kills 400 people a year.  Every home should have at least two detectors with fresh batteries.
  • A simple item, and it’s the one of the easiest items that you the homeowner can do.  CHANGE THE FILTER!!!!!  When a filter is clogged it can break down the flow of heat and air and your system works overtime to make sure your home is comfortable.
  • How old is your thermostat?  If its older than 10 years you should replace it with an efficient and newer model.  This will help regulate the air at the right temperature all the time.
  • During our inspection there could be noises coming out of your system.  Could be several items, like a clogged coil or a fan motor and wheel caked with good old West Texas dirt. We can fix this at a minimal cost.
  • Dry Air is a problem with wintertime.  Humidifiers help place moisture in the air and it would be a great item to purchase.  Also, Adam’s Air works closely with Air Oasis, with their clean air products that work and are fantastic for clean fresh air.

Summer. Will it linger for a while or fade away?

This morning I was somewhat surprised to see the school zone flashing on the way to work.  I knew school was starting up again, but it took me by surprise.  I guess since our children are grown it’s not that ingrained in my head.    The reason I am bringing this up, is for these kids, summer is over.  When I was a kid summer lasted from the middle of May to the end of August, not anymore.  I love summertime, its my favorite time of year.  But this year has been brutal, with the three-digit temperatures and hardly any rain.  My lawn looked great in late May and mid-June, now it’s a dried and cracked wasteland!   And being in the heating and air business we have heard all the stories ,and we have been in 150-degree attics doing what we do to fix our wonderful customers , and we have heard all the horror stories of our customers trying to withstand the hot temperatures with no air in their home.   We feel for you and we try our best to get you scheduled so we can make you more comfortable.   We have worked long hot days, and by the end of the day we get to go home and get cool with our own HVAC.  In a way I am waving this summer so long, but I guarantee you, that first icy frigid air I feel from Canada I’ll be wanting summer back.  So, the guys here at the shop were talking along with Adam about how much time we have left before we gear up for cooler climates.  Most of us agreed that we will have a Indian Summer, and maybe by Thanksgiving we can have cooler weather.  Until then make the best of anytime you have off, even if its inside.  And remember, Adam’s Air will be with you in all kinds of weather, all you must do Is give us a call.

Frozen Coil is Telling You Trouble is Ahead!

Has your air conditioner during these hot few weeks seem to not keep up with keeping the house cool?  If its not, there could be some problems that can turn into larger expensive problems.  Your inside coil that is attached to the HVAC could be frozen.  If you look at the attached picture, we pulled this coil out because it had frozen up so many times, that it needed to be replaced.  There are a few things that the homeowner can and should do that could save you money.

  • Change air filters- This is the number one culprit that will block airflow during summer and winter.  When the filter is full it blocks air flow and makes your system work harder to supply fresh clean air.  Dirty filters mean added stress on your compressor and other components.  A new compressor runs from $1000- up and over to $1800., installed. Change your filter every three months and in peak times of summer and winter change it out once a month.
  • Low Refrigerant Levels- Your system could be leaking refrigerant. Low levels of refrigerant can make the evaporator coil too cold and it could freeze up.
  • Insufficient Fan Speed- The fan inside your home must blow fast enough to keep proper amount of air blowing over the coil.  A technician can increase the fan speed and most likely do away with freezing coil.
  • Thermostat Problems- The AC could run all night when it doesn’t need to do so.  This wastes energy and money and can freeze the air conditioner.   Have a technician check the thermostat for wiring issues or replace it with a energy or Wi-Fi model.
  • Drainage Problems- You have a drain pan under your unit which keeps the excess water coming off the coil.  When summer is here and your AC is working overtime, the water can sometimes back up because a drain might be plugged up.  A technician can come out and unplug the drain.  If this doesn’t happen the pan can leak over and the water ends up on your ceiling and eventually leak through to your house.  The water can also start freezing from pan and go all the way back to your coil.

A couple of items you can do in your home and then call Adams Air and have us go over everything in the HVAC system.

Simple Steps for a More Efficient Summer, ( chilling this summer)

Summer is upon us and we have a couple of steps to make your outside unit run in the most efficient way. When your HVAC is not clean, efficiency of the unit drops, and your AC won’t cool your home like it should. When your outside condenser is full of leaves and dirt and grime the unit loses power, it could drop by more than 30%. When this happens your unit will be at 60-70 % effective. Grab your water hose and place a power washer nozzle on it and you can spray the inside and the out side of the coil to clean it up. Its that easy. Also please check your inside filters to make sure they are clean and free of debris. Change out an average of every three months.
